20 for 20

On Thursday my Judge sentenced a 20 year old kid to 20 years in Florida State Prison.

I will never forget his face and the blank expression that came over him, as he asked the other in custody clients, “What did he [the Judge] just say?!?!”

His mom looked at me in confusion and asked me, “What did the Judge sentence him too?”

We all heard it loud and clear but we didn’t really hear it . . .

Thursday I really felt the weight of being a Public Defender like never before.  This young man will be released from prison when he is 40 years old.  He would spent half of his “real” life (20’s and 30’s) in prison.  What hope does he have?  I’m not sure . . .
